FAQ

Does My Hawaii Hostel have quiet hours?

Because My Hawaii Hostel wants to respect our neighbors who are permanent residents and visitors alike, as well as ensure our own guests get a good nights' sleep, we observe quiet hours from 10 pm to 6 am.

What time is check in and check out?

Check in is 3 pm.  However, if you need to drop your bags off earlier you may but know that your room and bed may not be ready before 3 pm.  Check out is 11 am.

My departing flight is late at night. Do you have late check-out?

We know that many flights out of Kona to the mainland are late at night.  We have secure storage to keep your luggage at the hostel during the day.  We only ask that you pack up your luggage so we can clean your bed for the next guest.  If you need to check out late, please talk to the reception upon arrival.

My arrival flight is late at night.   I see your reception hours are until 8 pm.  Can I check in late at night?

Yes, with a previous booking you may arrive after 8 pm.  However, we do not allow bookings for those arriving on flights landing AFTER 10 pm.  If your flight arrives late at night when you book online please indicate in the comments your flight arrival time.  The time your flight lands to the time you arrive at the hostel including collecting your luggage, and transportation is about an hour.  If you are getting a rental car this time can be between 1.5 and 2 hours.  The hostel is about a 30 minute drive from the airport.  Upon arrival the on-site manager will meet you in the lounge to check you in.  If you do not find them, simply ring the doorbell on the building and they will come.

We do not accept walk-ins after 8 pm without a prior reservation.  DO NOT show up at the hostel after 8 pm unless you have made a reservation!

Is there a secure place to keep my valuables?

Yes, dorm rooms all have individual lockers to store valuables such as computers, cameras, passports, money, etc.  The lockers are NOT big enough to hold an entire suitcase or travel backpack.  We do provide locks upon arrival.

Are linens and towels provided?

Yes, all linens including towels are provided.  No need to pack your own!

What is the closest bus stop?

The closest bus stop is directly in front of the building and is called Kona Bali Kai.  For more information on how to find us see Getting Here.

Do you have free parking?

Yes, we have an 8 spot parking lot adjacent to the building used on a first come first serve basis.  If this should fill up there is also public parking about 100 meters down the street.

How far are you from town or beaches?

My Hawaii Hostel is located in a residential area along Alii Drive.  We are about 3 miles (5 km) from downtown Kona (Kailua Pier).  And about 2.5 miles from Coconut Grove, the first conglomerate of shops and restaurants.  It takes about 45-50 minutes to walk to town, about 15 minutes to bike, and about 5 minutes in a car or on the bus.  So although we are not in the heart of the town, it is not difficult to get to town from our location even without a car.  We have many guests stay with us who do not have cars and they find it easy to get around using public transportation and/or hitchhiking.  It is also possible to get to several grocery stores on the Kona Trolley.

The Kona Trolley stops right in front of the hostel. This can take you to town or beaches.  Kahalu’u Beach Park is about 2 miles (3.5 km) from the hostel.  Walking to Kahalu’u takes about 40 minutes.  Magic Sands Beach Park is about 1 mile (1.5 km) from the hostel with walking time being about 15-20 minutes.  Both Magic Sands and Kahalu’u are great beaches for sunbathing, and swimming.  Kahalu’u is also a popular site for snorkeling and surfing.

Some hostels in Hawaii require proof of onward travel.  Does My Hawaii Hostel also have this policy?

No, at this point we do not require proof of onward travel.  However, if you do not have plans for onward travel (i.e. you are a resident, living here on the Island, or transitioning to living on the Island), the maximum number of nights you may stay is four nights.
