Getting Around the Big Island
The Hele-On is the Big Island public transportation system that has both north and south routes from Kona to Hilo dropping at various locations in between. This is an economical way to get many places on the Island however, it takes some advanced planning as the times are limited. To plan your trip to a location out side of Kona visit Hele-On Bus. If you need assistance interpreting the locations please don't hesitate to ask!
The bus to Hilo from Kona leaves twice a day (Mon-Sat). It passes right in front of the hostel at 6:30 am. Or you can take the 4 pm bus that picks up behind Target and in the Kmart parking lot. The 4 pm bus does not pass the hostel! The bus costs $2 and takes about 3 hours.
