Getting Around the Big Island

Hele-On Bus

The Hele-On is the Big Island public transportation system that has both north and south routes from Kona to Hilo dropping at various locations in between. This is an economical way to get many places on the Island however, it takes some advanced planning as the times are limited. To plan your trip to a location out side of Kona visit Hele-On Bus. If you need assistance interpreting the locations please don't hesitate to ask!

The bus to Hilo from Kona leaves twice a day (Mon-Sat).  It passes right in front of the hostel at 6:30 am.  Or you can take the 4 pm bus that picks up behind Target and in the Kmart parking lot.  The 4 pm bus does not pass the hostel!   The bus costs $2 and takes about 3 hours.

Car Rentals

Kona International Airport Car Rental

All of the major car rental companies have offices at the Kona International Airport and it is often cheapest to get a car at this location.  However, if you don’t pick up a car upon arrival the easiest way to get back to the airport is to take the 7:45 am Hele On bus (Mon-Sat only) that picks up directly in front of the hostel.  You will arrive at the airport around 8:30 am.

Kona Town Car Rental

Dollar Rental Car & Enterprise Rent-A-Car: These two companies do have offices in town.  Dollar Rental Car is located in the King Kam Hotel and Enterprise is in Old Industrial.

Turo: Turo facilitates renting cars from private individuals.

Scooter Rental

Scooters are a convenient way to get around Kona.  However, it is not advised to take a scooter out of town as they do not move fast enough to get out of the way of other traffic.

Aloha Kona Moped: They are located in Old Industrial but will drop a scooter at the hostel.  Ask about weekly rates.
